Loree Smith couldn’t watch.

It was the sixth and final round of the women’s hammer throw at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials at Hayward Field, and Sara Veress, who stood third in the competition, was less than three feet shy of earning a ticket to the Beijing Olympics if she could improve on her personal best on her last attempt.
